Purpose: This study compared the effects of oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and/ or local corticosteroid injections for treatment of trigger finger.
Methods: From May 2010 to February 2013, we evaluated the results of 76 patients, 109 digits treated of local corticosteroid
injections and/ or oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The treatment group was divided into 2 modalities: 37 cases in oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug only, 39 cases local corticosteroid injections and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Grades of triggering according to severity were assessed preoperatively. Duration of symptom, graded after treatment, complications were assessed at 2-week, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up examinations.
Results: The results were as follows: Average time of significant improvement in grade was 11 weeks and 70.3%(26 cases) was improved after oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug treatments. Average time of significant improvement in grade was 5 weeks and 77%(30 cases) was improved after local corticosteroid injections and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
Conclusion: The study found that steroid injection is an effective first-line intervention for the treatment of trigger digit.
